An Important Project in the Studies of Film History: Homer

Abstract

A conference on cinema studies organized by the European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (NECS) was held on July 19-22, 2013 in Prague under the title “Media Politics-Political Media.” Emrah Özen conveys his impressions of presentations made at the conference. He emphasizes that the most significant feature of film studies this year was a series of sessions prepared by project HOMER (History of Moviegoing, Exhibition and Reception). He states that the HOMER project introduced the “New Cinema History” movement (NCH). This movement analyzes the legal and political discourses that shape the commercial activities of film distribution/circulation and the image of cinema in public life. According to Özen, the HOMER project and the NCH movement have brought a breath of fresh air into the field of history studies, which had seemed to be repeating itself. He also claims that the primary lesson that film history studies in Turkey can learn from NCH is the necessity of field studies.
