“Home Invasion” as a Subgenre of Thriller

Abstract

This study analyses two films, Panic Room (David Fincher, 2002) and Knock Knock (Eli Roth, 2015), that belong to the “home invasion” subgenre of thriller. While analysing these films analogically, the study takes into consideration the concepts of “place,” “home,” and “the uncanny.” While discussing the reciprocals of these concepts in these films it also examines their political and societal implications. This concurrence includes “is possible” within the discussion of the “is” and “ought to” of social sciences through the opportunity of imagination provided by cinema. Today, “is possible,” one of the assertions of this study, should be grasped as the need for expansion of the social sciences, because it provides the opportunity to think about the established reflexivity of modernity.
