Oedipus in Popular Cinema: On Fathers and Sons in Vay Arkadaş and Düğün Dernek

This study analyses two films, Vay Arkadaş (Kemal Uzun, 2010) and Düğün Dernek (Selçuk Aydemir, 2013), with an emphasis on the relationship between sons and their fathers. The theoretical framework is based on the Freud’s concept of the Oedipus complex. The father-son relationship is explored with a focus on plot, character, time and space, dialogue, and cultural space, within the framework of psychoanalytic theory. The article concludes that the two films reveal a crisis of fatherhood.
