The “Other” in terms of Grief: Sing For Darfur

Sing For Darfur (Johan Kramer, 2008), an activist film produced by Spanish and Dutch activist film-makers, narrates the collective inertia of Western society in response to genocide in Darfur. Sing For Darfur challenges its audience by deconstructing daily life in a European city, Barcelona. In this essay, following an analysis of the film, the discussion is focused on grief and how grief is diverted in Western society when the subject of grief is the “Other.”

Keywords: Sing For Darfur, Darfur genocide, the other, grief, face.
