Thinking About the Cinematic Image

This article focuses on Gilles Deleuze’s critical model of the cinematic image, questioning first of all, his discussions about the essence of moving images since the beginning of the 20th century. Secondly, concepts of image, movement, and time are explicated by the means of Deleuze’s books Cinema 1: The Movement-Image (1986) and Cinema 1: The Time-Image (1989). This article’s aim is not to present a comprehensive inquiry into the terminology employed in these two books but rather to discuss questions related to the essence of the cinematic image and its new form as shaped by Deleuze’s approach.

Keywords: Image ontology, cinematic representation, movement-image, time-image.
