University Students’ Reception of 12 September Coup Films in the Context of Political Discourse

This study examines university students’ reception of Vizontele Tuuba (Vizontele Tuuba, Yılmaz Erdoğan, 2004), Babam ve Oğlum (My Father and My Son, Çağan Irmak, 2005) and Eve Dönüş (Homecoming, Ömer Uğur, 2006), three “September 12th Coup Films” shot during the 2000s. The tradition of Cultural Studies provided the theoretical and methodological premises of the study, which utilizes the two main approaches of reception studies in cinema, namely the historical materialist and the ethnographic approaches of Janet Staiger and Jackie Stacey. The data were collected from twenty young persons in sixty semi-structured interviews. The study highlights the context of reading in the analysis of data; the reception of the films is analyzed through “contextual discourses” in a historical framework.
